It is not difficult to imagine why the ancient Etruscans decided to inhabit these places.
You can only understand it by coming to visit the towns and cities that were once inhabited by them and chosen among the vast sandy expanses and rocks overlooking the sea.
The territory extends in the province of Livorno, with the municipalities from south to north of Piombino, San Vincenzo, Castagneto Carducci, Bibbona, Cecina, Rosignano Marittima and Livorno while inland we find Collesalvetti, Sassetta, Suvereto and Campiglia Marittima.
Here you will find enchanting views and small bays where, out of season, you will find a place suitable for reflections and sunsets over the sea.
This article is not enough to describe the numerous diversities that characterize the entire coast but you may find inspiration for an upcoming vacation or an upcoming real estate purchase.
DO YOU PREFER THE BEACH OR THE ROCKS?
The beauty of the Etruscan Coast is that it offers a variety of beaches and places to dive into this sea that, over the years, has received the Blue Flag certificate.
The part of the coast where you can find the beaches, if you have children or simply prefer absolute relaxation, are mostly low and sandy in the stretch between Rosignano Solvay to the north and the Gulf of Baratti to the south.
Precisely in this area, the promontory of Piombino rises, on the top of which stands Populonia, which divides the Gulf of Baratti from Piombino and at the same time marks the border between the Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
An exception is made by the beaches in the central part between Rosignano Solvay and Vada, called white beaches.
In the northern part, however, you can dive between the promontories of Castiglioncello and Quercianella, the closest to Livorno, behind which extend the so-called Livorno Hills.
Here is a list of beaches for you, including the most beautiful sandy and rocky ones in Tuscany and that you can find right here on the Etruscan Coast:
BAIA DEL QUERCETANO
CECINA BEACH
MARINA DI CASTAGNETO
SPIAGGE DI SAN VINCENZO
BEACH DI BARATTI
BEACHES DI PIOMBINO
For those who love dogs and want them to be present on their holidays, you may often have found it difficult to find beaches that also welcome them (even if today it is much easier than a few years ago to find beaches that accept furry friends).
You can find it convenient to go to Cecina to the Spiaggia Bau Beach Fosso Nuovo, Bau beach Le Gorette, near Tomboli Bau Beach Marina di Bibbona while in Rosignano the Bau Beach Spiagge Bianche.
YOUR FAMILY ON THE ETRUSCAN COAST
I cannot fail to highlight the countless activities that you can find in these places to be able to choose your property near the sea and full of services suitable for families.
If you choose the coast of the province of Cecina, in addition to the port served by connections to the Island of Elba, you and your family can spend your holidays in the Nature Reserve known as Pineta di Tomboli.
There is a 5 km path that connects Marina di Cecina to Marina di Bibbona that you can do by bike or on foot, suitable for adults and children and to relax, nothing better than in the shade of the trees and organize a picnic on the benches that are found throughout the reserve.
A few km from the sea, you can take your children to the Giardino Sospeso Adventure Park in Riparbella where they will have fun on acrobatic courses suitable for all ages, instinctive archery exercises and a green area equipped with picnic tables and barbecues.
If you prefer to stay near the beach, in Castagneto Carducci you will find the very famous Cavallino Matto, an amusement park with games for children and activities for adults too.
If you are a couple or want to relax, away from the chaos and shouting, between San Vincenzo and Piombino, you will find the Rimigliano Park with shallow water for swimming in peace while admiring the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago; a stone’s throw away, in the cool pine forest, children can rest or play during the hottest hours.
In the park you will find a fitness trail, also accessible to the disabled, with 18 stations for various levels of difficulty.
In the Gulf of Baratti, the Etruscan city of Populonia, you can practice windsurfing and kitesurfing, rent boats, dinghies and canoes or take part in sailing and diving courses.
For those who love culture, there is the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia which during the summer organizes guided tours, theatrical performances and educational workshops of experimental archaeology.
We then arrive in Castiglioncello, a place remembered for the famous film Il Sorpasso by Dino Risi and from which one of the golden moments of the town began.
Even though it is no longer frequented by actors and movie stars as it was then, it is still chosen by a national and international clientele, both as a tourist destination and as a real estate preference.
Its beaches certainly offer different solutions especially for lovers of the rock but also for those who prefer to spend time in culture, it is possible to visit the beautiful Pasquini castle, dating back to the end of the 19th century, and the Castiglioncello tower, dating back to the 17th century.
For trekking lovers, there are a series of hiking trails on foot or by mountain bike, among the remains of the ancient magnesite mines and walking you can admire the enchanting views of the Tuscan coast.
In the municipality of Rosignano Marittimo, Castiglioncello is the one where the nightlife is most concentrated.
There are several discos such as the Astragalo Beach Club, located on the beach of the Quercetano Bay.
But today there are many places for an aperitif and after dinner and for those with children or who are not interested in nightlife, there are some very good restaurants on the seafront, which offer spectacular sunsets and a seafront for romantic and relaxing walks.
Finally (even if there would be other places to mention) we find Livorno.
Having become very popular in recent years, it is a port city with its own peculiar charm; it is an active city directly on the coast, with its bathing establishments, restaurants and bars, the Livorno Aquarium and the elegant Naval Academy.
It is a very lively city today, suitable for young people and families who want to have all the necessary services, including entertainment and the sea all year round.
It is an ancient city and still preserves the walls and the Fortezza Vecchia Medicea, in addition to the suggestive Venezia district, precisely because it is similar to the Venetian city, it is immersed in canals called “fossi”.
Then there is the shopping street, Via Grande, which today shines with the most important brands and chains for casual fashion but not only.
You have a wide range of opportunities, where to choose your property for your holidays or if you have decided to move to one of the most beautiful areas of the Italian coast.
